After replacing Ryuichi’s shampoo with bright orange hair dye, Aset decided it was a wonderful time to go into the outlands for a while…maybe a month or more. She chuckled at the thought and almost wished it was worth the pain Ryu would no doubt inflict to see her reaction when she looked in a mirror…though given the length of the Tensho’s beautiful blue hair, she probably wouldn’t need a mirror and all things considered it was not worth a painful death when she could just see it all on the security cameras when she returned.
Three weeks into her solitary mission in the outlands, Aset was almost wishing she had stayed at NOA to face Ryuichi’s wrath. The outlands were either desperately boring, or fatally dangerous, but never really exciting. She had told the general her mission was to look for survivors to bring into EDEN but she had yet to see another human being.
Just as Aset was about to decide risking Ryu’s revenge was better than spending another week in the lonely wilderness, she heard sounds of a struggle a little ways ahead.
Aset jumped out of her jeep and broke into a sprint. She came upon a shocking scene. An enormous Atanan was being restrained by…the surrounding plants. Entire trees had wrapped their trunks around the thing’s arms and legs and were forcing it down to the ground into a submissive pose in front of the sorriest, scrawniest looking girl Aset had laid eyes on in a long time.
When the creature was down and not moving, Aset approached cautiously and cleared her throat. “Ahem,” she said as she summoned a small string of fire twirling it around her finger before untwirling it and repeating the process. It was a nervous habit but this young girl in front of her had great power and as far as she knew, she was the only NOA officer that had leave to be in the Outlands at that time.
Aset kept a wary eye on the Atanan but she knew it wasn’t going anywhere. “My name is Aset Sharai and I’m the Chiso of the Noble Offensive Academy in EDEN. What’s your name? What are you doing out here? Where did you get your Tohsu?” Aset asked gently.
The girl started to back away before her gaze whipped back to the bound Atanan. Aset realized that if this girl lost concentration, the plants would suddenly be not so helpful.
Not only for an offer of good will but also out of consideration for her own safety, Aset said, “If you’d like, I can take care of this Atanan right now and it won’t be able to hurt you or anyone else ever again. Then perhaps you can relax a bit. Have a seat and have some of my food and water. How does that sound?”
Aset was good with kids, but they were usually just terrified of her position, not her…or everything else for that matter.
The strange girl’s gaze went from Aset to the Atanan and back to Aset a few times before she swallowed and managed to croak out, “My name’s Alexa Sigrun, m’lady and I’d be happy to take you up on your offer.” It sounded as if the poor girl hadn’t spoken a word in weeks, maybe even months.
Aset nodded and moved in between Alexa Sigrun and the defeated Atanan before purring, “Now now, dear Atanan. You’ve been defeated by a little girl and now you’re facing one of the best. Why don’t you be smart and walk away once you’re free? Don’t make me destroy you.”
She nodded to Alexa who released her hold on the plants that promptly went back to reaching for the sun. The Atanan stood up and came after the girls without a second thought. Well then, I guess I’ll have to make you think twice. Aset thought as she summoned and threw a massive fireball at it followed by another huge fireball setting the surrounding area ablaze. Surrounded by fire, the Atanan now had second thoughts and always loathe to destroy an Atanan, Aset let it run away.
Satisfied, Aset turned back round to face the girl. She looked like hell, the poor thing. She motioned Alexa to sit as she jogged back to her jeep and drove it up to pull out a lunch for the two of them. She flashed Alexa a genuine smile.
“Eat up, Alexa. You’re safe now.”
